As in ROXX GANG..hell I love them bigtime...others hate them and make jokes...but eh...They will always be a fave of mine...no matter who says what.

I make fun of the old bands such as Motley, Poison, Warrant and such due to my always hating them and never personally considering them part of MY "Glam world". I have made fun of those bands since they first hit the scene and have always thought they deserved every single bit of ridicule that they ever got. In interviews they were idiots and they never tried to show the style they played to be anything but stuff to get drunk and laid to. The music was nothing but an excuse to get drunk and laid. I always found them an insult to the style they claimed to be a part of. Even when Marc Bolan was trying to get laid, he did it in a brilliant way that was VERY smart.

But hey, if people love the stuff, then all is cool. You will notice I don't say much anymore about those bands, as I have decided it wasn't cool to always have a negative comment about what some people love. I don't hear the stuff the same as the fans of those bands do, and thats cool. Hell, Raggz has made numerous posts in the past few weeks about his liking of Roxx, and I have said NOTHING. I also kept my mouth shut about that "Blaq" band, for the most part. I am REALLY impressed with myself that I kept as quiet as I did about that one. [img]wink.gif[/img]

The thing about our scene is that we've never treated it as disposably as the critics and mainstream would have. We cling to old bands and pick up new ones as we go. Do I still love listening to Poison 24/7? No. Will I toss my cds just because I might go a month or two without tossing on in? No. There are a great many artists I fancied for a bit (D2, Trixter, Vixen) and grew weary of. I hate Slaughter. I hate any post-s/t Firehouse. That said, I have found many underground bands from that era (Quireboys, Blue Tears, Blackfish, etc.) that I love. I won't give up on them just to 'move on'. When I discovered glam punk, I didn't render my cd collection meaningless. I just added them to the mix and enjoy the wide variety of artists that I have. I might outgrow music but, being a timeless media, I will never grow old of an artist simply due to their output.

Also, fans like us have rather discerning tastes, to be sure. I still laugh whenever somebody calls me a snob. lmao 2002 was one of the best years EVER for cds. Most of those bands were 'newer' artists. Scrit Scratt, SSC, Peppermint Creeps, Roller, American Heartbreak, Robin Black, etc. I will never get into some artists, but that's due to my taste. All of us on here have that same passion, that same individuality, that the music industry loathes.

That's what makes our shared interests the most special of all musics out there. [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

I don't know man, I think many of us on this site are way too forgiving of stuff. Some of what I have seen praised on this site surprises me, and scares me to think it is what the style has to offer, and really tells me that if we don't get somebody out there soon, then the style will indeed start to fade away and turn to the rare underground band.

The Glam style is like any other style, it's followers are rabid and dedicated. I still think the most impressive of all the music fans out there would have to be the fans of Progressive Rock. That shit hasn't been truely popular since the mid-70's, and yet those fans keep plugging along and sticking to the stuff. There was a slight ressurgence of the style in the 80's, but then it was ripped by the purists, and created two camps in the style, the classic fans and the Neo fans.

But for every style out there, you will find fanbases that stick to their style and learn every nook and cranny of it.

What drives me crazy about the Glam scene though is the lack of care in the products. So many of the releases sound like pure shit. I don't care if these bands are doing it themselves, if you listen to the majority of the self-produced Prog stuff out there, most times you can't tell it isn't a major label release. Plus, the scene is dying for people to be involved, so crap musicians are put in place just because they can kind of play, and they like the style. Some of these bands are terrible in one aspect or another.

The old stuff will always have a following, as long as the new stuff is such crap. It's a shame really, since all of these bands have one or two great talents in them, and then are dragged down by something sloppy. Then there are the people who I believe have a shitload of talent (here I will name Kiko and Andii) and yet are bogged by not finding the ability to get the stuff out in a good fashion.

Yeah, I still love some old bands and I always will. Hell, I'm on a Cheap Trick kick right now and buying all of the albums. Odd that I never owned more than a couple at a time. The old stuff will survive, if it was good. Some of the old stuff that was bad will survive because it is good to somebody. Never make excuses for what you like, and never apologize for liking it. Unless it's Roxx Gang, that shit is just wrong.

I agree that a lot of the scene is shit right now. How many good to great bands only released one awesome cd? Celebrity Skin, Star Star, Orphan Punks, Big Bang Babies and Jerry Vayne come to mind. PBF's first was awesome but they've just regurgitated it since. Trash Brats still amaze me by their output as do Enuff Z'nuff and American Heartbreak. The thing about the scene is that we are cool with bands that never even managed a proper release (QBP, Revlon Red, and Andii come to mind). We see the magic within. The music is the key. Even if it's 25th generation bootleg, we still appreciate it.

That said, a lot of releases by the bands supposedly in the scene, I will never buy. BOD and Velvet Revolver are examples of this. The image and bluster is there, but the music, imo, is shit. Same goes for many 80's bands like Slaughter, Warrant, and others. Of that era, I'll buy anything Poison releases that is new. Other than that, it's gotta be underground for me. Unfortunately, the majors only see what they push. You think they have any idea who HTM or Vain are? I really doubt it.

I gave that BOD another chance yesterday. My buddy was being lent it, so I decided to give it a go. The main problem there is a severe lack of identity. They have no idea what they want to be, and when they flip styles there is no consistent voice or sound, and none of what they do really fits well. It's also horribly dated.

As for the Prog stuff, yeah, Asia you could say. But also bands like Marillion and IQ, and even the classic bands that tried modernizing such as Camel and Eloy. Eloy lost all original members except for Frank Bornnham, and he employed a keyboard guru and all the music turned to synths and drum machines with Franks guitar, and the true Prog style left.

Finally in the 90's bands such as Porcupine Tree, Spocks Beard and Anglagard took the style back, and used the classic ideas, but modernized brilliantly and saved the music. Marillion's album "Brave" also breathed fresh life into the style. In the later 90's one of the saviors of Prog has been a band named Arena, who oddly enough was formed by ousted Marillion drummer Mick Pointer.
